AL-DHĀRIYĀT
THE SCATTERERS

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
The surah that opens with the oath of the Divine One swearing by The Scattering winds that stream far and wide bearing the rain clouds of His mercy. It takes its name from verse 1, which mentions the “scatterers” (dhāriyāt). The surah gives several signs of nature as proof of the Resurrection, among them the scattering winds. The disbelievers are reminded of the fate that befell previous rebellious generations and the Prophet is urged to carry on reminding.The surah is also known as: Scattering (Winds), The Dispersers, The Dispersing, The Scattering Winds, The Winds, The Winds That Scatter, Winnowing (Winds).
1
وَالذّارِياتِ ذَروًا

wa-dh-dhāriyāti dharwan

By the scattering [winds]that scatter [the clouds];
2
فَالحامِلاتِ وِقرًا

fa-l-ḥāmilāti wiqran

by the [rain] bearing [clouds]laden [with water];
3
فَالجارِياتِ يُسرًا

fa-l-jāriyāti yusran

by [the ships] which move gently [on the sea];
4
فَالمُقَسِّماتِ أَمرًا

fa-l-muqassimāti ʾamran

by [the angels] who dispense [livelihood]by [His] command:
5
إِنَّما توعَدونَ لَصادِقٌ

ʾinnamā tūʿadūna la-ṣādiqun

indeed what you are promised is true,
6
وَإِنَّ الدّينَ لَواقِعٌ

wa-ʾinna d-dīna la-wāqiʿun

and indeed the retribution1 will surely come to pass!Or ‘judgement.’
7
وَالسَّماءِ ذاتِ الحُبُكِ

wa-s-samāʾi dhāti l-ḥubuki

By the sky full of adornment [with stars],1Or, ‘By the heaven full of tracks’ (or pathways).
8
إِنَّكُم لَفي قَولٍ مُختَلِفٍ

ʾinnakum la-fī qawlin mukhtalifin

indeed you are of different opinions!
9
يُؤفَكُ عَنهُ مَن أُفِكَ

yuʾfaku ʿanhu man ʾufika

He is turned away from it1who has been turned away [from the truth].That is, from the Qurʾān. Or ‘from him,’ that is, from the Apostle of Allah.
10
قُتِلَ الخَرّاصونَ

qutila-l-kharrāṣūna

Perish the liars,
11
الَّذينَ هُم في غَمرَةٍ ساهونَ

alladhīna hum fī ghamratin sāhūna

who are heedless in a stupor!
12
يَسأَلونَ أَيّانَ يَومُ الدّينِ

yasʾalūna ʾayyāna yawmu d-dīni

They ask, ‘When will be the Day of Retribution?’
13
يَومَ هُم عَلَى النّارِ يُفتَنونَ

yawma hum ʿalā n-nāri yuftanūna

It is the day when they will be tormented in the Fire,
14
ذوقوا فِتنَتَكُم هٰذَا الَّذي كُنتُم بِهِ تَستَعجِلونَ

dhūqū fitnatakum hādhā lladhī kuntum bihī tastaʿjilūna

[and will be told]: ‘Taste your torment.This is what you used to hasten.’
15
إِنَّ المُتَّقينَ في جَنّاتٍ وَعُيونٍ

ʾinna l-muttaqīna fī jannātin wa-ʿuyūnin

Indeed the Godwary will be amid gardensand springs,
16
آخِذينَ ما آتاهُم رَبُّهُم ۚ إِنَّهُم كانوا قَبلَ ذٰلِكَ مُحسِنينَ

ʾākhidhīna mā ʾātāhum rabbuhum ʾinnahum kānū qabla dhālika muḥsinīna

receiving what their Lord has given them,for they had been virtuous aforetime.
17
كانوا قَليلًا مِنَ اللَّيلِ ما يَهجَعونَ

kānū qalīlan mina l-layli mā yahjaʿūna

They used to sleep a little during the night,
18
وَبِالأَسحارِ هُم يَستَغفِرونَ

wa-bi-l-ʾasḥāri hum yastaghfirūna

and at dawns they would plead for forgiveness,
19
وَفي أَموالِهِم حَقٌّ لِلسّائِلِ وَالمَحرومِ

wa-fī ʾamwālihim ḥaqqun li-s-sāʾili wa-l-maḥrūmi

and there was a share in their wealthfor the beggar and the deprived.
20
وَفِي الأَرضِ آياتٌ لِلموقِنينَ

wa-fī l-ʾarḍi ʾāyātun li-l-mūqinīna

In the earth are signs for those who have conviction,
21
وَفي أَنفُسِكُم ۚ أَفَلا تُبصِرونَ

wa-fī ʾanfusikum ʾa-fa-lā tubṣirūna

and in your souls [as well].Will you not then perceive?
22
وَفِي السَّماءِ رِزقُكُم وَما توعَدونَ

wa-fī s-samāʾi rizqukum wa-mā tūʿadūna

And in the sky is your provisionand what you are promised.
23
فَوَرَبِّ السَّماءِ وَالأَرضِ إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ مِثلَ ما أَنَّكُم تَنطِقونَ

fa-wa-rabbi s-samāʾi wa-l-ʾarḍi ʾinnahū la-ḥaqqun mithla mā ʾannakum tanṭiqūna

By the Lord of the sky and the earth,it is indeed the truth,just as [it is a fact that] you speak.
24
هَل أَتاكَ حَديثُ ضَيفِ إِبراهيمَ المُكرَمينَ

hal ʾatāka ḥadīthu ḍayfi ʾibrāhīma l-mukramīna

Did you receive the storyof Abraham’s honoured guests?
25
إِذ دَخَلوا عَلَيهِ فَقالوا سَلامًا ۖ قالَ سَلامٌ قَومٌ مُنكَرونَ

ʾidh dakhalū ʿalayhi fa-qālū salāman qāla salāmun qawmun munkarūna

When they entered into his presence,they said, ‘Peace!’‘Peace!’ He answered,‘[You are] an unfamiliar folk.’1Cf. 15:62.
26
فَراغَ إِلىٰ أَهلِهِ فَجاءَ بِعِجلٍ سَمينٍ

fa-rāgha ʾilā ʾahlihī fa-jāʾa bi-ʿijlin samīnin

Then he retired to his familyand brought a fat [roasted] calf,
27
فَقَرَّبَهُ إِلَيهِم قالَ أَلا تَأكُلونَ

fa-qarrabahū ʾilayhim qāla ʾa-lā taʾkulūna

and put it near them.He said, ‘Will you not eat?’
28
فَأَوجَسَ مِنهُم خيفَةً ۖ قالوا لا تَخَف ۖ وَبَشَّروهُ بِغُلامٍ عَليمٍ

fa-ʾawjasa minhum khīfatan qālū lā takhaf wa-bashsharūhu bi-ghulāmin ʿalīmin

Then he felt a fear of them.They said, ‘Do not be afraid!’and they gave him the good news of a wise son.1See 11:69-73 and 15:51-60 for parallel descriptions of the episode of Abraham’s guests.

فَأَقبَلَتِ امرَأَتُهُ في صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّت وَجهَها وَقالَت عَجوزٌ عَقيمٌ

fa-ʾaqbalati mraʾatuhū fī ṣarratin fa-ṣakkat wajhahā wa-qālat ʿajūzun ʿaqīmun

Then his wife came forward crying [with joy].She beat her face,and said, ‘A barren old woman!’
30
قالوا كَذٰلِكِ قالَ رَبُّكِ ۖ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الحَكيمُ العَليمُ

qālū ka-dhāliki qāla rabbuki ʾinnahū huwa l-ḥakīmu l-ʿalīmu

They said, ‘So has your Lord said.Indeed He is the All-wise, the All-knowing.’
31
۞ قالَ فَما خَطبُكُم أَيُّهَا المُرسَلونَ

qāla fa-mā khaṭbukum ʾayyuhā l-mursalūna

He said,‘O messengers, what is now your errand?’
32
قالوا إِنّا أُرسِلنا إِلىٰ قَومٍ مُجرِمينَ

qālū ʾinnā ʾursilnā ʾilā qawmin mujrimīna

They said,‘We have been sent toward a guilty people,
33
لِنُرسِلَ عَلَيهِم حِجارَةً مِن طينٍ

li-nursila ʿalayhim ḥijāratan min ṭīnin

that We may rain upon them stones of clay,
34
مُسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلمُسرِفينَ

musawwamatan ʿinda rabbika li-l-musrifīna

marked with your Lord for the profligate.
35
فَأَخرَجنا مَن كانَ فيها مِنَ المُؤمِنينَ

fa-ʾakhrajnā man kāna fīhā mina l-muʾminīna

So We picked out those who were in itof the faithful,
36
فَما وَجَدنا فيها غَيرَ بَيتٍ مِنَ المُسلِمينَ

fa-mā wajadnā fīhā ghayra baytin mina l-muslimīna

but We did not find thereother than one house of muslims,
37
وَتَرَكنا فيها آيَةً لِلَّذينَ يَخافونَ العَذابَ الأَليمَ

wa-taraknā fīhā ʾāyatan li-lladhīna yakhāfūna l-ʿadhāba l-ʾalīma

and We have left therein a signfor those who fear a painful punishment.’
38
وَفي موسىٰ إِذ أَرسَلناهُ إِلىٰ فِرعَونَ بِسُلطانٍ مُبينٍ

wa-fī mūsā ʾidh ʾarsalnāhu ʾilā firʿawna bi-sulṭānin mubīnin

And in Moses [too there is a sign]when We sent him to Pharaohwith a manifest authority.
39
فَتَوَلّىٰ بِرُكنِهِ وَقالَ ساحِرٌ أَو مَجنونٌ

fa-tawallā bi-ruknihī wa-qāla sāḥirun ʾaw majnūnun

But he turned away assured of his might,and said, ‘A magician or a crazy man!’
40
فَأَخَذناهُ وَجُنودَهُ فَنَبَذناهُم فِي اليَمِّ وَهُوَ مُليمٌ

fa-ʾakhadhnāhu wa-junūdahū fa-nabadhnāhum fī l-yammi wa-huwa mulīmun

So We seized him and his hosts,and cast them into the sea,while he was blameworthy.
41
وَفي عادٍ إِذ أَرسَلنا عَلَيهِمُ الرّيحَ العَقيمَ

wa-fī ʿādin ʾidh ʾarsalnā ʿalayhimu r-rīḥa l-ʿaqīma

And in ʿĀd when We unleashed upon thema barren wind.
42
ما تَذَرُ مِن شَيءٍ أَتَت عَلَيهِ إِلّا جَعَلَتهُ كَالرَّميمِ

mā tadharu min shayʾin ʾatat ʿalayhi ʾillā jaʿalathu ka-r-ramīmi

It left nothing that it came uponwithout making it like decayed bones.
43
وَفي ثَمودَ إِذ قيلَ لَهُم تَمَتَّعوا حَتّىٰ حينٍ

wa-fī thamūda ʾidh qīla lahum tamattaʿū ḥattā ḥīnin

And in Thamūd, when they were told,‘Enjoy for a while.’
44
فَعَتَوا عَن أَمرِ رَبِّهِم فَأَخَذَتهُمُ الصّاعِقَةُ وَهُم يَنظُرونَ

fa-ʿataw ʿan ʾamri rabbihim fa-ʾakhadhathumu ṣ-ṣāʿiqatu wa-hum yanẓurūna

Then they defied the command of their Lord;so the thunderbolt seized themas they looked on.
45
فَمَا استَطاعوا مِن قِيامٍ وَما كانوا مُنتَصِرينَ

fa-mā staṭāʿū min qiyāmin wa-mā kānū muntaṣirīna

So they were neither able to rise up,nor to come to one another’s aid.1Or ‘nor to guard themselves (from the punishment).’
46
وَقَومَ نوحٍ مِن قَبلُ ۖ إِنَّهُم كانوا قَومًا فاسِقينَ

wa-qawma nūḥin min qablu ʾinnahum kānū qawman fāsiqīna

And the people of Noah aforetime.Indeed they were a transgressing lot.
47
وَالسَّماءَ بَنَيناها بِأَيدٍ وَإِنّا لَموسِعونَ

wa-s-samāʾa banaynāhā bi-ʾaydin wa-ʾinnā la-mūsiʿūna

We have built the sky with might,and indeed it is We who are its expanders.1Or ‘indeed it is We who are expanding it.’
48
وَالأَرضَ فَرَشناها فَنِعمَ الماهِدونَ

wa-l-ʾarḍa farashnāhā fa-niʿma l-māhidūna

And the earth We have spread it out,so how excellent spreaders We have been!
49
وَمِن كُلِّ شَيءٍ خَلَقنا زَوجَينِ لَعَلَّكُم تَذَكَّرونَ

wa-min kulli shayʾin khalaqnā zawjayni laʿallakum tadhakkarūna

In all things We have created pairsso that you may take admonition.
50
فَفِرّوا إِلَى اللَّهِ ۖ إِنّي لَكُم مِنهُ نَذيرٌ مُبينٌ

fa-firrū ʾilā llāhi ʾinnī lakum minhu nadhīrun mubīnun

[Say,] ‘So flee toward Allah.Indeed I am a manifest warner to you from Him.
51
وَلا تَجعَلوا مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلٰهًا آخَرَ ۖ إِنّي لَكُم مِنهُ نَذيرٌ مُبينٌ

wa-lā tajʿalū maʿa llāhi ʾilāhan ʾākhara ʾinnī lakum minhu nadhīrun mubīnun

Do not set up another god besides Allah.Indeed I am a manifest warner to you from Him.’
52
كَذٰلِكَ ما أَتَى الَّذينَ مِن قَبلِهِم مِن رَسولٍ إِلّا قالوا ساحِرٌ أَو مَجنونٌ

ka-dhālika mā ʾatā lladhīna min qablihim min rasūlin ʾillā qālū sāḥirun ʾaw majnūnun

So it wasthat there did not come to those who were before themany apostlebut they said, ‘A magician,’ or ‘A crazy man!’
53
أَتَواصَوا بِهِ ۚ بَل هُم قَومٌ طاغونَ

ʾa-tawāṣaw bihī bal hum qawmun ṭāghūna

Did they enjoin this upon one another?!Rather they were a rebellious lot.
54
فَتَوَلَّ عَنهُم فَما أَنتَ بِمَلومٍ

fa-tawalla ʿanhum fa-mā ʾanta bi-malūmin

So turn away from them,for you will not be blameworthy.
55
وَذَكِّر فَإِنَّ الذِّكرىٰ تَنفَعُ المُؤمِنينَ

wa-dhakkir fa-ʾinna dh-dhikrā tanfaʿu l-muʾminīna

And admonish,for admonition indeed benefits the faithful.
56
وَما خَلَقتُ الجِنَّ وَالإِنسَ إِلّا لِيَعبُدونِ

wa-mā khalaqtu l-jinna wa-l-ʾinsa ʾillā li-yaʿbudūni

I did not create the jinn and the humansexcept that they may worship Me.
57
ما أُريدُ مِنهُم مِن رِزقٍ وَما أُريدُ أَن يُطعِمونِ

mā ʾurīdu minhum min rizqin wa-mā ʾurīdu ʾan yuṭʿimūni

I desire no provision from them,nor do I desire that they should feed Me.
58
إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الرَّزّاقُ ذُو القُوَّةِ المَتينُ

ʾinna llāha huwa r-razzāqu dhū l-quwwati l-matīnu

Indeed it is Allah who is the All-provider,Powerful, All-strong.
59
فَإِنَّ لِلَّذينَ ظَلَموا ذَنوبًا مِثلَ ذَنوبِ أَصحابِهِم فَلا يَستَعجِلونِ

fa-ʾinna li-lladhīna ẓalamū dhanūban mithla dhanūbi ʾaṣḥābihim fa-lā yastaʿjilūni

Indeed the lot of those who do wrong [now]will be like the lot of their [earlier] counterparts.So let them not ask Me to hasten on [that fate].
60
فَوَيلٌ لِلَّذينَ كَفَروا مِن يَومِهِمُ الَّذي يوعَدونَ

fa-waylun li-lladhīna kafarū min yawmihimu lladhī yūʿadūna

Woe to the faithlessfor the day they are promised!
